Spring Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips

 – By

With hot, sunny days right around the corner, now is the time to ensure your air conditioner is in tip-top shape so you aren’t stuck sweating all summer. Not only will you and your family stay nice and cool, but keeping up on air conditioner maintenance will also help you save money on your energy bills and prolong the life of your system. Take a little time out during your spring cleaning and follow these few simple steps for prepping your air conditioner so it can tackle the upcoming heat.

Change the air filter
A simple yet often overlooked task in many households is the regular changing of the unit’s air filter. Dirty filters not only block airflow, which causes the system to work harder, but they also allow debris to enter into the evaporator coil, which can lower the coil’s heat absorbing ability. It is recommended to change filters every one to two months, although you will need to change them more frequently if you have pets, or if someone in the household has allergies.

Clean the evaporator and condenser coils
Even if you are diligent about routinely changing out your cooling system’s air filter, dirt can still make its way in and settle on the evaporator and condenser coils, coating the coils and causing them to not absorb heat as well. Leaves, mower clippings and other debris should be removed from outdoor condenser coils, and care should be taken not to plant foliage within two feet of the coil to allow for sufficient airflow.

Straighten coil fins
Evaporator and condenser coils contain aluminum fins that, when bent out of position, inhibit air flow and make your cooling system work harder. Fin combs, which are available through Action Mechanical, allow you to easily reshape the fins to make sure your system continues to run efficiently.

Seal window units
While you’re positioning your window A/C unit, be sure to check the seal between the system and the window to ensure it is still effectively restricting airflow. Over time, moisture can cause the seal to not work as well and can allow cool air to escape. Simply maintaining a strong seal will go far in keeping your home more energy efficient, as well as keeping more money in your wallet.

Cover your system with a maintenance agreement
Let the friendly professionals at Action Mechanical take care of the work for you by purchasing a maintenance agreement. Available to both commercial and residential customers, maintenance agreements will help you extend the life of your air conditioner and catch small mechanical issues before the become big disasters. They cover cooling systems, as well as heating and plumbing systems, and will guarantee that tasks such as changing air filters won’t be neglected again.

As always, contact Action Mechanical if you have questions regarding your air conditioner maintenance. We’re here to help you keep your home comfortable all year round!
